Verify This Week (8/2015)

Verify This Week (8/2015)
Ruben Bouwmeester

Here, we regularly share our findings from the world of social media verification: What tools, services and initiatives are there? Who is doing what? What’s the state of affairs regarding eyewitness media and related issues? Here is our list for this week.

Privacy trend complicates eyewitness media for journalism

With the rise of anonymous Social Networks and communities moving to new tools like Firechat, the discovery of content for journalistic purposes might become even more challenging.

Damian Radcliffe explains the reasons behind the rapid growth of private messaging networks. The main challenge for discovery of content is how journalists can access this ‘offline’ content and how they will engage with these closed communities. Verification of source and content on private messaging networks is a challenge on its own. Read the full article here.

Pipl

Those of you who do verification on a daily base will surely know this platform: Pipl. Working on some exercises for a verification training I was once again flabbergasted by the amount of data that I can find about different sources on Social Media via Pipl. Vice versa, I am also scared of the amount of data that people can find out about me, just by typing in my name.

Other tools that I tend to use are the Storiful Multisearch Chrome pluginpeekyou.com and Spokeo. What tools do you use for your source verification? Let us know via the comments section below or via @revealeu!
