Meet(ing) the Verified Pixel Project

Meet(ing) the Verified Pixel Project
Jochen Spangenberg

REVEAL recently met with the team of the Verified Pixel Project – plans were made to cooperate in the future, especially in the area of image verification.

We recently met with the Verified Pixel Project team. The project is led by Douglas Arellanes, co-founder of Sourcefabric, Samaruddin Stewart, a visual journalist and technologist, and Sam Dubberley, co-founder of Eyewitness Media Hub.

The aim of the Verified Pixel Project, according to the team, is to “… help demystify image verification for journalists.” To achieve this, the plan is to bring together a variety of image verification tools and merge them in a unified platform, automating the verification workflow to a large extent.

The project has received $35,000 in funding from the Knight Foundation. It is to run from 29 April until 31 December 2015.

At our meeting in Berlin we outlined and discussed each other’s ideas, approaches and achievements to date. We found numerous overlaps and areas for deeper cooperation, especially in the areas of image analysis and verification. We agreed to stay in touch, exchange ideas and work outcomes, and cooperate wherever feasible.

If you want to get in touch with the Verified Pixel Project team or its leading actors, you may contact them individually via Twitter, or use the contact section on the project’s homepage.
